What’s a summer picnic without baked beans?! A dud, right? Well here is a great recipe for those take-along-beans and it avoids the sugar and other processed ingredients found in commercial beans and even many homemade recipes.

Lucia’s Baked Beans

Tasty, no-sugar version of the popular boston baked beans

Equipment

  • Instant Pot
  • 9×13 Casserole dish

Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups dry Navy beans cooked (may crockpot overnight and also use great northerns, or cannelloni beans), 1 pound of dry beans or 9 cups of cooked beans
  • 1 med Onion chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced or crushed
  • 1 ½ c. tomato puree
  • ½ c. date sugar or pitted dates blended with tomato puree
  • c. date syrup (or molasses)
  • 1 tsp. onion powder
  • 1 T. lemon juice
  • 1 Tbs. vegetable salt
  • 2 tsp. Bakon yeast
  • ½ tsp. salt or to taste
  • 2 Tbs. Braggs Aminos

Instructions

  • Cook beans until tender.
  • Add all other ingredients and bake in a 9” x 13” casserole dish at 350° for 1 hour until golden brown and bubbly.
  • Tastes even better the next day.

Notes

Serving Suggestions:
• Try them over toast for a great entrée.
• You can pack them in a thermos for a wonderful hot lunch in the winter.

    1. Hi Anita, Wow! good catch :). Yes, the software that does the calculations had attributed several hundred thousand calories to the lemon juice🤣🤣. It’s all fixed now though – thanks for your comment!
